Biography

Battle & Winn lawyer Harlan Winn is a founding partner in the firm. Before founding Battle & Winn in 2004, Harlan was a partner at a law firm of more than 200 attorneys based in Birmingham. Prior to private practice, Harlan served as law clerk for the Hon. Edwin L. Nelson, a federal trial court judge in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.


Harlan’s practice focuses on business litigation, estate litigation, and insurance coverage disputes. Harlan’s clients include individuals, privately held companies, and publicly-traded corporations. Harlan represents these clients as plaintiffs and defendants in cases in federal and state courts nationwide. He has served both as class counsel and lead defense counsel in state and nationwide class actions. Harlan is rated AV by Martindale-Hubbell, which is the highest possible peer review rating. Harlan is recognized as an Alabama “Super Lawyer”—a recognition limited to only 5% of Alabama lawyers each year. Harlan has been recognized as one of the top lawyers in Birmingham by B-Metro Magazine since 2010.

Education

Harlan obtained his B.A. in economics from Washington & Lee University in 1990, and he received his J.D., summa cum laude, from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 1994. In law school, Harlan was awarded the Dean's Scholarship, elected to the Honor Court, and served on the editorial board of the Cumberland Law Review.

Bar Admissions

Harlan is licensed to practice in the state and federal courts of Alabama and Mississippi, and the Fifth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeals. He has appeared pro hac vice in courts in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee, California, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Oklahoma.

Outside the Firm

Harlan grew up in Pensacola, Florida. He and his wife, Gina, have four adult children. Harlan is a retired youth baseball, basketball, softball, and soccer coach. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Birmingham Golf Association and is currently an assistant golf coach for the Samford University men’s golf team. Harlan teaches youth Sunday School at Canterbury United Methodist Church. When time permits, he is an avid outdoorsman.
